LVT care

Why LVT is the easiest floor you'll ever clean.

Luxury vinyl tile from brands like Karndean and Amtico is engineered for real family life. Waterproof, non-porous and virtually stain-proof — it takes minutes to keep looking showroom-fresh, week after week.

The science

Why LVT is so low-maintenance

Luxury vinyl tile is built in layers. On top sits a clear wear layer — typically 0.55mm on premium Karndean and Amtico ranges — that is completely waterproof and non-porous. Nothing soaks in. Below that is the printed design layer, protected for the life of the floor. The result is a surface that behaves more like a wipe-clean worktop than a traditional floor.

  • Waterproof. Spills sit on the surface. There is no grain to soak into and no grout to discolour.
  • Stain-resistant. Red wine, coffee, curry, mud and pet accidents wipe away with a damp cloth.
  • Hygienic. The non-porous surface doesn't harbour dust mites or bacteria — a real plus for allergy sufferers.
  • No sealing, no waxing. Unlike real wood or stone, LVT never needs to be re-sealed, oiled or polished.
Everyday

Your 2-minute daily routine

Keeping LVT looking new is genuinely a two-minute job. The single biggest thing you can do is remove grit before it gets walked in — grit is what scratches every hard floor over time.

  • Sweep or vacuum. A soft-brush vacuum head or a microfibre sweeper lifts dust, hair and grit in seconds. Turn off any beater bar on hard-floor mode.
  • Wipe spills as they happen. A damp cloth is all you need — no dashing for special products.
  • Use a doormat. A good coir or rubber-backed mat at every external door stops 80% of grit at the threshold.
Once a week

The weekly damp mop

Once a week — or whenever the floor looks like it needs it — a light damp mop restores that just-fitted shine. It really is that simple.

  1. 1. Vacuum first. Never mop over loose grit; you'll drag it across the wear layer.
  2. 2. Mix a mild solution. A capful of pH-neutral LVT cleaner (Karndean Clean or Amtico Floorcare Cleaner are ideal) in a bucket of warm water.
  3. 3. Damp mop, don't flood. Wring the mop until it is just damp. LVT does not need to be soaked to come clean.
  4. 4. Let it air dry. A microfibre mop leaves the floor almost dry already — no towelling, no streaks.

That's it. No buckets of hot water, no rinsing, no polish. Ten minutes for an entire kitchen-diner is realistic.

Real life

Spills, mud and pet accidents

Because LVT is fully waterproof, everyday mess is a non-event. Muddy football boots, a spilled glass of Ribena, or a puppy's little accident — none of it will stain, swell or lift the floor if wiped up in a reasonable time.

Mud and dirt

Let it dry, sweep the loose stuff and damp mop. Trying to clean wet mud spreads it further.

Wine, coffee, juice

Wipe with a damp cloth. No blotting, no panic. There is nothing for the liquid to soak into.

Pet accidents

Wipe clean, then damp mop with pH-neutral cleaner. LVT doesn't hold odours the way carpet or wood can.

Grease splashes

A drop of washing-up liquid in warm water lifts kitchen grease from around the hob effortlessly.

Stubborn marks

Tackling stubborn marks

Very occasionally you might get a mark that a damp mop doesn't shift — a scuff from a rubber sole, a smear of shoe polish, a splash of hair dye. Both Karndean and Amtico publish a spot-cleaning guide for these situations, and it is refreshingly straightforward.

  • Rubber scuffs. A drop of Karndean Remove (or Amtico Stripper) on a soft cloth lifts them straight off.
  • Ink, lipstick, shoe polish. Dab with a little white spirit on a cloth, then damp mop.
  • Chewing gum, candle wax. Chill with an ice pack, then lift with a plastic scraper.

Always work on the smallest area first and test in a hidden corner if you are unsure. For everything else, warm water and pH-neutral cleaner is the answer.

Protect the wear layer

What to avoid

LVT is tough, but a couple of common cleaning habits can dull the wear layer over time. Skip these and your floor will look immaculate for a decade or more.

  • No steam mops. Karndean and Amtico both advise against them. Heat and moisture can affect the adhesive.
  • No bleach or ammonia. Harsh chemicals can dull the finish. Stick to pH-neutral cleaners.
  • No abrasive pads or scourers. Use a soft cloth or microfibre only.
  • No polish or wax. The factory finish never needs it — polish just builds up and attracts dirt.
  • No soaking. A damp mop is all it takes. Standing water at edges and joints is unnecessary.
The specialists

Karndean vs Amtico care

The care routine is almost identical for the two market leaders. Both make matched cleaning products that are optimised for their own wear layers, and using them will keep the floor at its best.

Karndean

Karndean Clean for daily/weekly mopping. Karndean Refresh once or twice a year to top up the factory finish. Karndean Remove for stubborn scuffs.

Amtico

Amtico Floorcare Cleaner for regular use. Amtico Floorcare Dressing to revive shine on older floors. Amtico Stripper for a deep restorative clean.

If you'd rather keep the cupboard simple, a good pH-neutral hard-floor cleaner from any supermarket will do the everyday job perfectly well.
